Optoretinography is an emerging field that uses optical methods to non-invasively measure light-evoked changes in the length of retinal photoreceptors. These structural changes arise from the biochemical cascade underlying vision, known as phototransduction. Analysis of photoreceptor deformations provides indirect insight into the efficiency of biochemical processes and the physiological state of retinal cells. In this work, we investigate the parametrization and modelling of photoreceptor responses to quantitatively describe the underlying mechanisms, improve our understanding of phototransduction, and explore potential links to neurological and ophthalmic diseases.
About the speaker
Ewelina Pijewska received her PhD from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, where her research focused on applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for studying the dynamics of biological tissues. She subsequently completed a 1.5-year postdoctoral fellowship in the group of Prof. Robert Zawadzki and Prof. Ravi Jonnal at University of California in Davis. She led an OPUS-funded research project in Toruń focused on Doppler OCT. She is currently joining the group of Prof. Marinko Sarunic at University College London for a second postdoctoral fellowship, continuing her research on optoretinography.
