Adaptive Optics phase modulation to explore the frontiers of human vision

Vision relies on a complex system, which comprises an optical camera and a neural processor, adjusting to matchemical visual coding and environment. Light-based technologies have allowed further understanding of its limits and pave the way to the development of novel treatments Phase modulation has allowed significant insights on visual scence, from the optical properties of the eye, as well as the processes of neural adaptation behind them. Adaptive Optics (AO) based visual simulators are now able to couple the measurement of the aberrations with thelr correction or manipulation by means of different active technologies (deformable murrors, spatial light modulators, optotunable lenses), both m monochromatrc and polychromatic condibons, allowing the characterization of the chromatic aberrabon of the human eye and its impact on vision. The understanding of the interactions of these aberrahons and their effect upon correcton is essential to explore the limits of human spatial vision, and to design and optimize new alternatives of ophcal corrections Moreover, optical and structural propertes of the eye change with age and with certain ocular conditions and treatments, altering the natural aberrations, thei interactions, and consequently the visual functon. In the last years, visual simulators have revolutionized the management of Presbyopia, the loss of the autofocus accommodation of the human eye, and its treatment. They allow mapping the phase profile of a contact lens (CL) or an intraocular lens and explore vision with those corrections prior to being fitted or implanted in the eye, and even manutactured, therefore aliowing the patient to experience different corrections in a completely non-invasive manner. in the last years, applications for Myopta management have ansen, allowing a better understanding of visual performance with MCLs in young eyes, where MCLs may be prescribed to control the progression of myopia wherein the MCLs optics mteract with accommodation, and in presbyopes, where MCLs are increasingly used to compensate the lack of accomrmodaton
