In this special seminar, Prof. David Huang will share the story of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) from the perspective of its inventor. He will explain the physics behind OCT in an accessible way, describe the “aha!” moment that sparked the idea, show how the technology evolved from a laboratory concept into a clinical tool used by millions of patients worldwide, and discuss future directions, including 3D imaging and the emerging field of oculomics for brain and heart diagnostics. Prof. Huang’s pioneering work has been recognised with the Lasker Award, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
About the speaker
Prof. David Huang is an ophthalmologist, biomedical engineer, and co-inventor of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), the imaging technology that transformed ophthalmic diagnostics and is now widely used in ophthalmology, cardiology, and other medical specialties. He serves as Director of Research at the Casey Eye Institute and leads the Center for Ophthalmic Optics & Lasers (COOL Lab) at Oregon Health & Science University.
His work has resulted in more than 350 scientific publications and dozens of patents advancing OCT and biomedical imaging. In recognition of his contributions, he has received the Lasker Award, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, and induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
