The Functional Impact of Retinal Degeneration in Mice and Humans

  • Speaker: PhD Matteo Rizzi

This seminar explores how retinal degeneration affects vision beyond the damaged cells. Combining mouse and human studies, it examines behavioural and perceptual consequences of vision loss, from optogenetic restoration and navigation tasks in mice to microperimetry in patients. The findings highlight how degeneration reshapes visual function and may help define better therapies and outcome measures.

About the speaker

Dr Matteo Rizzi is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Visual Perception and Repair Laboratory at University College London. His research focuses on understanding how retinal degeneration alters visual function and on developing strategies to restore vision. Combining animal models with clinical studies, his work bridges basic neuroscience and translational research, with a particular emphasis on gene therapy, retinal repair, and visual perception.
